KIC vice chair Kevin Hendrick then provided a brief account of secessionist efforts in northern California, and the actions our group is taking to combat this extremely dangerous proposal. We then seized the opportunity to tell him about some of the genuine problems facing the region (and by extension, all of rural California), and mentioned several concrete, practical steps the state legislature could take to redress the balance:
- Restore Payment in Lieu of Taxes funding to counties for state wildlife areas and other properties taken off the tax roles
- Restore reimbursement to counties for tax reductions on agricultural properties protected under the Williamson Act
- Ensure that ALL State Responsibility Area revenues (“Fire Fee”) are directed towards fire prevention programs benefiting the communities where the fee is paid.
The Senator responded positively to all three suggestions, and has asked us to stay in touch, an invitation we have every intention of accepting!
